Dark into dark [videorecording] / Charlemagne Palestine. [1979]

This psychologically charged piece focuses on light and darkness, need and rejection, and the relationship of performer and audience. In a dark space, Palestine can be heard humming and whispering to himself. Very slowly his eyes and then his face become visible. He addresses the viewer in a tone that shifts between threatening, cajoling, laughing, and accusing. As Palestine moves into the light and then recedes back into the shadows, darkness can be seen as a metaphor for the safety of ignorance and isolation.
